Luz Rello
Sánchez (Madrid, 1984) holds a degree in Linguistics from the Complutense
University of Madrid (UCM), a master’s in Natural Language Processing and Human
Language Technology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) – thanks
to a fellowship from the ”la Caixa” Foundation – and from the University of
Wolverhampton. She earned her PhD in Computer Science from the Department of
Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF).
Her research, focused on applying artificial intelligence to the treatment of dyslexia, has received several awards, including the European Young Researchers’ Award (2013), granted by Euroscience, and the Princess of Girona Award (2016). It has also earned her a place in the MIT Technology Review’s list of Innovators Under 35 (2020) and recognition as an Ashoka Fellow, among other distinctions.
To bring the results of her research to society, in 2015 she founded the social enterprise Change Dyslexia and integrated her findings into the digital platform Dytective, which has been used by 450,000 people and is implemented in hundreds of public schools across Spain. In 2019, Change Dyslexia was awarded the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the use of information and communication technologies in education.
She is the co-author of two books in Spanish, two children’s books and several articles in indexed journals. Her book Superar la dislexia (Overcoming Dyslexia), published by Paidós, has already gone through seven editions. She has also worked as a consultant for Apple and Google, and has been a member of the International Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service.
