Héctor Huerga Encabo
Location
Barcelona
Description
Before joining the CaixaResearch Institute, he worked at the Francis Crick Institute as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dominique Bonnet. During this time, he demonstrated that certain mutations evolve in response to environmental stresses and alter the development of innate immune cells, such as neutrophils and monocytes. Building on this work, his group investigates potential markers that may help predict which individuals could develop conditions such as cancer or cardiovascular diseases.
His research, published in journals such as Cell Stem Cell, Blood, The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Immunology and The Journal of Experimental Medicine, has helped to redefine the role of haematopoietic stem cells in health and disease. Huerga Encabo has been recognised with international fellowships such as the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund Fellowship, as well as grants from the European Haematology Association and Cancer Research UK.
