Description

After graduating with a degree and completing his PhD in Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Josep Dalmau specialised in neurology and trained in neuro-oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

He has spent a large part of his career in the United States, where he was a Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania and co-director of neuro-oncology programmes. Subsequently, he joined the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona as an ICREA Research Professor; currently, he combines these roles with his position as a group leader at the CaixaResearch Institute.

His research focuses on immune-mediated neurological diseases. In particular, his work is internationally recognised for describing and characterising several autoimmune encephalitides caused by antibodies that attack neuronal proteins. He has also contributed to the development of new diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies for these conditions.

In addition to his research and clinical work, he is the editor of Neurology: Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation and a member of several international scientific academies, including the National Academy of Medicine in the United States.

His career has been recognised with numerous national and international awards. Notable among these are the 2025 Gregorio Marañón National Research Award in Medicine and Health Sciences, one of Spain’s leading scientific honours; the King Jaime I Award for Medical Research; and the George C. Cotzias Award from the American Academy of Neurology.
