Michael Abdul-Masih

PhD in Astrophysics from the KU Leuven and postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias

Location

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Description

He completed his undergraduate and master’s studies in the United States and then moved to Belgium to pursue his PhD studies at KU Leuven with a thesis focusing on the observational characterisation of massive stars. During his PhD he developed the SPAMMS code, which takes into account the three-dimensional geometry of non-spherical stars. He then obtained a postdoctoral fellowship at the European Southern Observatory in Chile. There, he worked at the Paranal Observatory as a support astronomer for the Université Toulouse III and as an operator of the associated instruments Xshooter, SPHERE, CRIRES and ESPRESSO.

Currently, thanks to the Junior Leader - Incoming fellowship from the ”la Caixa” Foundation, he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, where he is researching the enlargement of the sample of massive overcontact binaries, a type of system composed of two stars that are so close that they share their outer layers.
