The institute will be the first research centre specialising in immunology in Spain and one of the first in Europe. With an investment of around 100 million euros, it will have a total area of over 20,000 m2 and some 500 people are expected to work there.

The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and the president of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, Isidre Fainé, took charge of laying the first stone of the centre.

Under the scientific direction of Dr Josep Tabernero, the institute aims to attract new talent profiles that contribute to projecting biomedical research and innovation in one of the most promising fields for health. Dr Antoni Ribas, a world expert in immunotherapy, has recently been chosen as the chairman of the advisory committee for the future facility.

As a first activity of the CaixaResearch Institute, the ”la Caixa” Foundation is organising the Human Immunome Project “Into Action” seminar next 15 and 16 November at the CosmoCaixa Science Museum.
