Description
Martínez López focuses her work on studying the mechanisms that link the nervous system and the immune system. Her research in neuroimmunology explores how dendritic cell activity is modulated by this interaction and how factors such as stress may influence processes related to the development and progression of cancer.
During her PhD at the Autonomous University of Madrid, she contributed to identifying how the Mincle receptor in dendritic cells enables the parasite Leishmania to evade the immune system, as well as the essential role that this same receptor plays in recognising the gut microbiota. Both findings, published in Immunity, earned her the Extraordinary Doctorate Award and the Young Women Researchers Award from Lyceum de Ciencia – Banco Santander.
Following her training at the University of Oxford – where she undertook a placement at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology during her PhD under the supervision of Dr Fiona Powrie – and her time at the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC), María Martínez López has consolidated an international career focused on understanding how dendritic cells modulate the immune response by integrating neuroendocrine signals, with the aim of advancing new therapeutic strategies in the future.
