Art, science and technology come together in CaixaForum Madrid’s new immersive experience, Root for Nature. Produced and travelled by Oasis Immersive Studios in collaboration with National Geographic, this exhibition wants to immerse visitors in the beauty and fragility of our natural world. The three chapters of the show offer powerful perspectives of biodiversity and invite guests of all ages to become catalysts for positive change.

The director of CaixaForum Madrid, Isabel Fuentes, and the president and co-founder of OASIS Immersive Studios, Denys Lavigne, today presented Root for Nature, an inspiring immersive experience that invites visitors on a journey to the heart of nature to admire the flora, fauna and natural wealth of our planet in a highly sensory way.

Root for Nature underscores the importance of preserving the Earth’s balance and encourages visitors to take positive action in response to the challenges facing biodiversity today. This immersive experience was conceived following the historic signing of the COP15 agreements (the 15th United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity, held in Montreal), at which nearly 200 countries committed to reversing biodiversity loss and protecting 30% of all ecosystems by 2030.

The loss of biodiversity is a major global issue, driven by factors such as climate change, changes in land and sea use, direct exploitation of species, pollution and the presence of invasive alien species, according to a report by IPBES scientists.

To help raise awareness, OASIS and National Geographic have created this experience, which offers a powerful and contemporary interpretation of biodiversity in all its splendour, combining the best of immersive digital art with themed scenography and educational and informative zones.

The production of this immersive experience has also brought together several organisations committed to conservation and sustainable development, including the United Nations, the David Suzuki Foundation and the environmental non-profit organisations Workshops for Biodiversity and Age of Union.

In Root for Nature, art serves as a vehicle for breaking down the barriers between humanity and the natural world, sparking awareness and civic action. This experience is an ode to optimism and a celebration of art and biodiversity as reflections of our inseparable connection with nature, as well as a reminder that every small gesture matters in building a sustainable future. The Root for Nature experience has been named Best International Exhibit at the 2025 Numix Awards ceremony.

“The exhibition conveys a message of hope and also invites individual awareness, while at the same time underlining the impact of collective efforts. Protecting biodiversity is a shared responsibility in which coordinated action and the sum of individual commitments are key to achieving real progress,” says Isabel Fuentes, director of CaixaForum Madrid.

"By combining National Geographic’s legacy of exploration and conservation with the creative vision of OASIS Immersive Studios and the cultural leadership of la Caixa Foundation, Root for Nature offers an innovative and inspirational way to engage audiences with the most pressing environmental issues of our time," says Cynthia Doumbia, Senior Director of Business Development at the National Geographic Society.

"With Root for Nature, our goal is to inspire hope and collective action through beauty, emotion, and knowledge. Presenting this experience at CaixaForum in Spain is a true privilege, and we look forward to seeing how audiences connect with the story of our shared planet. I also want to acknowledge the vision, professionalism, and commitment of the la Caixa Foundation team, whose dedication has made this collaboration possible,” adds Denys Lavigne, president and co-founder of OASIS Immersive Studios and the OASIS Immersion Group.

Mediation activities

As usual, CaixaForum Madrid has organised a range of activities to broaden the knowledge of visitors interested in the theme of the immersive experience Root for Nature.

On the one hand, this autumn, family audiences will be able to enjoy the season entitled Little Moviegoers: Root for Nature, which features film screenings that reflect the biodiversity of the natural world and our interrelationships with it. Viewers will be able to watch Savages, an ecological fable full of moving and courageous characters; Fox and Hare Save the Forrest, a stop-motion animation full of mystery and adventure; Wonders of the Sea, a documentary produced and narrated by Arnold Schwarzenegger, aimed at raising awareness of the treasures of the sea and the need to preserve them; and Short Nature Tales, a series of themed shorts that invite us to reflect on our communion with the natural world. At the beginning of each session, the CaixaForum education team introduces the film, provides the basic keys for interpreting and enjoying it, and invites the audience to take part in a family discussion following the screening.

Likewise, from the opening of the exhibition onwards, families will be able to take part in a family visit with mediation activities at the end of the immersive experience. These include games such as “The Balance That Sustains Us”, which explores a key aspect: the natural balance of ecosystems, in which species are interconnected with their environment, and human activity is causing major imbalances. In “Ideas of Interdependence”, visitors will also be able to build a living network that shows how everything in an ecosystem is interconnected and how the interdependence of species is vital to maintaining a healthy and functional environment.
