In 2004 he was awarded a fellowship from the ”la Caixa” Foundation for a postdoctoral placement at Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA), where he began to establish his international profile in translational research into HIV and infectious diseases.
Since 2007, he has led the Microbial Genomics Group at IrsiCaixa, overseeing projects in HIV therapy, emerging diseases, the microbiome and personalised medicine, and he coordinates international studies such as the European Horizon 2020 MISTRAL project. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he directed Spain’s participation in international clinical trials and, in 2024, was elected co-chair of the scientific committee of STRIVE, a clinical trials platform for treatments targeting emerging viral infections.
He has published more than 370 scientific articles and has received the Award for Professional Excellence from the Barcelona Medical Association. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University, and an adviser to the World Health Organisation on HIV and COVID-19.
